Sheer vs blockout curtains: which to pick

How sheer and blockout curtains differ, and when to layer them in a Sydney bedroom or living room.

Sheer curtains

Sheers soften daylight and keep a room feeling open. They filter light and views rather than blocking them, so at night, with the lights on inside, they usually need another layer behind them for privacy.

Blockout curtains

Blockout curtains are heavier and lined, which gives more privacy and light control. They suit bedrooms and media rooms. Light can still enter around the edges, so fit and coverage matter.

Layering both

Many homes combine the two on a double track or rod: sheers for the day and blockout at night. We check the space available when we measure.
