Retractable screens, Castle Hill
A slim retractable screen fitted inside a balcony sliding door in Castle Hill, where a standard flyscreen would not work.

Project details
Location: Castle Hill, NSW (Hills District)
Product: Retractable screen
Opening: Balcony sliding door
Challenge: Sprinkler outside the door and large mullions in the door frame
The challenge
The homeowner needed a flyscreen for a balcony sliding door. A standard flyscreen would not work here: there is a sprinkler on the outside of the door, and the door has large mullions, so a screen could not be fitted on the outside or in the usual way.
What we did
We thought outside the box and fitted a slim retractable screen to the inside of the door frame. The screen mounts on the frame itself, with no track fixed to the floor, so there is nothing to trip over when you walk through the doorway.
Why a retractable screen suited this door
The screen rolls away when you do not need it, so the door stays uncluttered, and it opens the door to fresh air while helping keep insects out. With no floor track, it also keeps the threshold clear. Every opening is different, so we assess each one in person and tell you plainly what will and will not work.
