Window furnishings for a new home: a room-by-room guide

Moving into a new home in an estate like Oran Park, Gregory Hills, Box Hill or The Gables usually means a lot of bare glass at once. Here is how to plan blinds, curtains and shutters room by room, and when to book so they are up soon after you move in.

When to book the measure

Made-to-measure window furnishings take 3 to 4 weeks to make and install, so book the measure as soon as you can get into the house. If your builder's package includes some blinds, check exactly which rooms and products it covers before ordering the rest.

Bedrooms

Blockout is the priority. Blockout roller blinds are simple and tidy, and blockout curtains add softness. For children's rooms, cordless or motorised blinds remove loose cords.

Living and family rooms

Sheer curtains or S-fold curtains soften the light and give daytime privacy. Dual roller blinds are a practical alternative, with sunscreen for the day and blockout for the night on one bracket.

Sliding doors

Vertical blinds, curtains on a track, or plantation shutters on sliding panels all work. The right choice depends on how often you use the door and how much of the glass you want to keep clear.

Bathrooms and laundries

Polymer shutters and sunscreen roller blinds handle moisture well and are easy to wipe clean.

Street-facing windows

These are the windows people see. Plantation shutters or matching sheers across the front give the house a finished look from the street.

Alfresco and doors to the yard

Outdoor blinds and zip screens make a new alfresco usable in summer sun and wind, and retractable flyscreens suit bifold and sliding doors because they roll away when you do not need them.

Plan the whole house in one visit

Having every window measured and quoted together lets you choose a consistent look, decide which rooms to do first, and avoid paying for a second visit later. We bring samples to your home so you can compare fabrics in your own light, and you deal directly with the owner from the first measure to installation.
